01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

OtterTune was a Pittsburgh cloud software company spun out of the Carnegie Mellon Database Research Group in 2020 by associate professor Andy Pavlo with Dana Van Aken and Bohan Zhang. Based on their academic OtterTune research project on self-driving database architectures, it offered a machine-learning service that automatically tuned database configuration knobs - hundreds of settings that affect performance and cloud costs - plus database health checks to mitigate outages. It supported PostgreSQL and MySQL on Amazon RDS and Aurora.
