- Founded
Advanced Chemotherapy Technologies is founded in North Carolina as a spin-out of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, based on technology developed by professors Joseph DeSimone and Jen Jen Yeh: an implantable iontophoretic drug delivery system designed to deliver chemotherapy directly to solid tumors such as pancreatic cancer with laser-like precision. The company closes prior seed financing rounds in 2017.
- Series A and grants
In February 2021, the company announces a $2.5 million Series A investment from Spectrum Financial to accelerate clinical trials of its lead product for pancreatic tumors; it also receives a $4 million National Institutes of Health grant.
- Renamed and acquired
The company, by now renamed Focal Medical, is acquired by Continuity Biosciences, LLC, announced June 4, 2025. Its lead product candidate, an iontophoresis device delivering gemcitabine to pancreatic tumors, has been cleared by the FDA through an Investigational New Drug application, with Phase 1b clinical trials expected later in 2025.
