01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Jia was a blockchain-based fintech startup founded in 2022 by former Tala executives Zach Marks, Cheng Cheng, Ivan Orone and Ye (Yuting) Wang. It offered loans of $200–$5,000 to micro and small businesses in emerging markets — initially Kenya and the Philippines — with the twist that borrowers earned 'Jia points' on repayment, tokens with a claim to a stream of the protocol's revenue. It raised $4.3 million in seed funding in May 2023 led by TCG Crypto (plus a $1 million on-chain liquidity commitment), launched lending pools on Celo and Polygon with Huma Finance, and crossed $2 million in loan originations in early 2025. No failure event has been reported.
