01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Saida was a Nairobi fintech founded in 2015 by Kyale Mwendwa and Kenneth Ngetha, and backed by Y Combinator's Summer 2015 batch. It launched as a mobile-based lending platform for emerging markets: a mobile app connected people with short-term loans, repaid in 30 to 60 days, approved in part from each person's phone activity — prepaid top-up patterns, data versus voice versus SMS spending and device details — as an alternative credit score for customers without credit cards. The company later described itself as a digital current account that lets users separate, spend and track money in dedicated 'pockets'.

03 / EVENT HISTORY
Events in the structured record
- Founded and launched
Kyale Mwendwa and Kenneth Ngetha found Saida in Nairobi; the startup joins Y Combinator's Summer 2015 batch and launches its phone-activity-based lending app for African borrowers.
- Mastercard Start Path
Saida joins Mastercard's Start Path program for the Middle East and Africa; its app has just launched in Kenya and has issued more than 16,000 loans.
- Pivot and ambiguity
Saida reframes its product as a digital current account with money 'pockets'. Sources conflict on the company's fate: one retrospective roundup claims it shut down around 2016, while Y Combinator and Digest Africa show an active consumer current-account product.
