Quibb
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Quibb was a members-only professional network founded in 2013 by Sandi MacPherson, a former climate-change scientist. Often called Reddit for professionals, it gave vetted tech people a place to share and discuss industry news — MacPherson personally reviewed every membership application, accepting around 43%, and the community grew to members from more than 27,000 startups. It raised a $750,000 seed round in 2014 led by Bloomberg Beta with betaworks and Lightbank, and shut down in October 2017.
02 / Quibb FAILURE REASONS
Failure factors supported by the current evidence
Quibb's founder never published a postmortem, so the evidence on the shutdown is thin. What the record does show: a four-year run on a $750,000 seed, a community whose quality depended on the founder personally vetting every member — a process that does not scale and concentrates the whole company on one person — and a monetization model that never worked (membership was free, with only an optional paid supporter tier). The exclusivity that made Quibb beloved also capped its growth and its revenue: a network that rejects most applicants is choosing quality over the scale that venture-backed companies must deliver.

05 / CAUSAL CHAIN
How the factors connect
- 01
Personal vetting every member does not scale — and puts the whole company on one person
- 02
Choosing quality over growth caps both growth and revenue
- 03
Free membership with an optional supporter tier is not a business model
