Reneo Pharmaceuticals
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Reneo Pharmaceuticals was a Nasdaq-listed biotech focused on rare genetic mitochondrial diseases. Its only product candidate, mavodelpar, was a selective PPAR-delta agonist developed for primary mitochondrial myopathies—muscle disorders caused by mitochondrial DNA defects with high unmet need. The company raised about $220 million but never commercialized a drug; after its pivotal trial failed, it merged with OnKure in 2024.
02 / Reneo Pharmaceuticals FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Reneo was a single-asset company, and that asset failed: on December 14, 2023, the pivotal Phase 2b STRIDE trial of mavodelpar in primary mitochondrial myopathies missed both its primary endpoint (12-minute walk distance) and its secondary fatigue endpoint. With no other pipeline candidate, the company halted mavodelpar development, cut about 70% of staff, and went into cash-preservation mode. Unable to continue independently, Reneo combined with OnKure in an all-stock merger in late 2024.
03 / EVENT HISTORY
Events in the structured record
- Operations scaled back
The pivotal STRIDE Phase 2b trial of mavodelpar misses its primary and secondary endpoints; Reneo suspends all development and cuts about 70% of its workforce.
- Acquisition
Reneo signs a definitive merger agreement with OnKure in May 2024; the all-stock merger closes in October 2024, ending Reneo as an independent company.
