K-Scale Labs
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
K-Scale Labs was a Y Combinator-backed robotics startup founded in 2024 by Ben Bolte and Rui Xu. It built open-source humanoid robots, including the Stompy development platform and the K-Bot, a full-sized humanoid robot it aimed to sell for a fraction of the cost of competitors like Tesla's Optimus. The company released its hardware designs and software tooling for free, betting that open-source hardware and low-cost manufacturing could democratize humanoid robotics.
02 / K-Scale Labs FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
K-Scale shut down within about a year of taking its first pre-orders because the economics of humanoid hardware turned against it. Chinese competitors such as Unitree collapsed prices (a Unitree G1 sells for about $20,000 in the U.S.), while K-Scale could not raise the $10-15 million follow-on round CEO Ben Bolte expected despite having raised $4 million in early 2024 at a $50 million valuation. Acquisition talks with 1X Technologies and The Bot Co. failed, with both suitors interested only in hiring a handful of engineers. With just $400,000 in operating funds left, the company laid off staff, refunded customer deposits, and closed in 2025.

The company raised $4 million in early 2024 at a $50 million valuation, with backing from Fellows Fund, Nat Friedman and Daniel Gross.
- 02
More than 100 K-Bot pre-orders worth over $2 million came in, but only two units were ever shipped.
- 03
The planned $10-15 million follow-on raise failed to materialize, and acquisition talks with 1X Technologies and The Bot Co. collapsed.
- 04
CEO Ben Bolte emailed investors that only about $400,000 in operating funds remained, then laid off staff and announced pre-order refunds in 2025.
- 05
The company shut down in 2025; founding engineers regrouped at a new venture, Gradient Robots.
