01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Halla, founded in New York in 2016 by Gabriel Nipote, Henry Michaelson and Spencer Price, was an AI 'taste intelligence' startup for grocery retail. Its plug-and-play API used over 100 billion shopper and product data points in three engines — Search (shopper preferences), Recommend (complementary products while shopping) and Substitute (replacement options for out-of-stock items) — to guide shoppers to food they want and grow retailers' basket sizes. In 2021 it closed a $4.5 million Series A1 round led by Food Retail Ventures, with SOSV and E&A Venture Capital participating, bringing total capital raised to $8.5 million.
