01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Hound Labs was an Oakland, California health-technology company founded in 2014 by CEO Dr. Mike Lynn — an emergency-room physician, reserve deputy sheriff and former venture capitalist. It built the HOUND Marijuana Breathalyzer: an ultra-sensitive, portable breath test intended to detect recent cannabis use on-site for law enforcement, employers and insurers. The company combined a handheld collection device with single-use cartridges and a base-station analyzer, held 14 patents, and raised about $130 million from investors including Benchmark, EEC, Icon Ventures and Intrinsic Capital Partners.
