01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Traversal Networks was a Y Combinator Summer 2015 cybersecurity startup founded by Ryan MacArthur, a former Symantec engineer. Its pitch was to be 'your company's cyber security department': Lateral Threat Detector appliances installed on corporate networks learned traffic patterns on each segment to catch lateral exploitation, backdoors, bots and malware, while the company's own analysts in the cloud triaged alerts and called customers with the right course of action. It targeted mid-market firms of 100 to 1,000 employees that couldn't afford in-house security experts and didn't know what to do with the alerts their tools produced.
02 / Traversal Networks FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Traversal Networks never got past a tiny founding team — Y Combinator listed a team size of one — and its decentralized, analyst-assisted model struggled to deliver the reliability enterprise security buyers demand. The mid-market was crowded with better-funded, integrated platforms, and a small team couldn't match their coverage or trust. After burning through roughly $5 million, the company wound down in 2018 with Y Combinator marking it inactive.
