LightSail Energy
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
LightSail Energy was a Berkeley, California compressed-air energy storage startup founded in 2008 by entrepreneur Stephen Crane and Danielle Fong, a physicist prodigy who enrolled at university at age 12. Its regenerative air energy storage (RAES) technology sprayed water droplets into compressed air tanks to boost efficiency, aiming to store grid energy for wind and solar. Backed by Khosla Ventures, Bill Gates, Peter Thiel, Total and Innovacorp, it raised about $70-80 million and grew to 55 employees, later pivoting to compressed-natural-gas transport modules when grid storage stalled.
02 / LightSail Energy FAILURE REASONS
Failure factors
Greentech Media (via EQ Mag Pro reprint) reported that after ~eight years and ~$80M raised, Berkeley compressed-air storage startup LightSail Energy ran out of cash before commercialization; CEO/co-founder Stephen Crane said it had essentially ceased operations and was in hibernation. Founder Danielle Fong later (12 Jan 2022) called LightSail/LightStore a defunct IP-licensing shell and said a lead-investor pivot to license (vs manufacture) tanks essentially killed the company.
Crane told Greentech Media LightSail ran out of cash before reaching commercialization and essentially ceased operations.
The company never deployed its isothermal CAES product outside the studio before cash ran out.
Fong later wrote that pivoting to tank licensing instead of manufacturing essentially killed the company.
