Zume Pizza (Detailed)
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Zume Pizza was a robotics food company founded in 2015 by Alex Garden that set out to automate pizza production and delivery end to end. Robots pressed dough, dispensed and spread sauce, and loaded pizzas into ovens, while delivery trucks with onboard ovens baked pizzas en route to customers. The company later pivoted to licensing its automation technology and, after acquiring Pivot in 2019, to manufacturing compostable food packaging.
02 / Zume Pizza (Detailed) FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Zume's core concept never worked at economic scale: cooking pizzas in moving trucks proved technically treacherous, with melted cheese sliding off during bumps and turns, and the operation burned cash far faster than it generated revenue. After raising $375 million from SoftBank at a $2.25 billion valuation in 2018, the company cycled through pivots - licensing automation, then sustainable packaging - but struggled to generate revenue, laid off more than 500 people in 2020, and could not raise new funding. Its packaging business also stumbled when its PFAS-containing boxes were found ineligible to hold food in some jurisdictions.
