01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

Dextrous Robotics was a Memphis-based robotics startup founded in 2019 by Evan Drumwright, a former senior research scientist at Toyota Research Institute, and Sam Zapolsky. It developed the DX-1, a fast, high-payload, gantry-based mobile manipulation system that used chopsticks as end effectors to unload boxes from semi trailers and shipping containers - one of the most physically dangerous tasks in warehousing. The DX-1 was entirely customized with few off-the-shelf parts, driving its bill of materials above $300,000 per unit.

02 / Dextrous Robotics FAILURE REASONS

Failure factors supported by the current evidence

The Robot Report (11 Jan 2024) quotes CEO Evan Drumwright: Dextrous could not close another funding round to start commercial DX-1 production; he pointed to post-COVID venture-market/interest-rate shift and high BOM; the firm shut down operations rather than continue into insolvency.

Failed Fundraising

Unable to close another round of funding needed to start commercial production of the DX-1.

Venture Market Shift

CEO said the primary factor was venture markets after COVID warped investing and higher interest rates raised the bar for short-term profitability.

Insolvency Risk

Drumwright said they shut down operations before continuing into insolvency and making people liable.

  1. Liquidation

TechCrunch (11 Jan 2024) and The Robot Report: CEO Evan Drumwright confirmed Dextrous Robotics became insolvent and dissolved/shut operations in late December 2023 after the investment market did not support its trajectory.

05 / CAUSAL CHAIN

How the factors connect

  1. 01

In 2019, Evan Drumwright and Sam Zapolsky founded Dextrous Robotics in Memphis to automate trailer unloading with a chopstick-like robot, the DX-1 - a gantry-based mobile manipulation system with chopsticks as end effectors. The company raised about $8 million in funding.

  2. 02

In late 2022, investors' reaction to the DX-1's bill of materials - over $300,000 per unit, fully customized - changed sharply; after COVID, venture markets rewarded shorter paths to profitability as interest rates rose.

  3. 03

In late December 2023, unable to close another funding round to start production of the commercial DX-1, Dextrous Robotics dissolved. CEO Evan Drumwright said the company had adopted an aggressive trajectory the recent investment market didn't support and became insolvent. No reliable loss figure was disclosed, so no loss amount is recorded.
