Jamglue
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Jamglue was a Y Combinator-backed (summer 2006) collaborative music remixing startup, officially incorporated on May 18, 2006. Its online platform let users mix, share and remix music tracks with remix contests run with labels like Nettwerk, Ninja Tune and Coldcut. Reaching over one million registered users and two million mixes by January 2009, the site went dark on May 5, 2010 with the message: 'Jamglue.com has shut down. Thanks for all your support.'
02 / Jamglue FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Jamglue never stated a public reason for its shutdown. The site's own retrospective, 'Jamglue: A Retrospective, 2006–2010,' documents four years of building a large remixing community — 75,000+ members by late 2007, over a million registered users and two million mixes by early 2009 — and then simply records that the site went dark on May 5, 2010. No official explanation was offered; this section reflects that absence rather than inventing one.
