Phez
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Phez (phez.co) was a Reddit clone built by Portland, Oregon software developer Shanti Braford and launched in the summer of 2015. The concept: a free-speech Reddit alternative that rewarded top content contributors in Bitcoin payments each month. The planned business model mirrored Reddit — build a big audience, then run ads, sell in-house ads and offer premium subscriptions (a 'phez gold').
02 / Phez FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Phez failed because of a poor business model: adding money (nickels and dimes of Bitcoin) to the equation made users less likely to contribute meaningfully — nearly all posts were bare-minimum efforts chasing micropayments, while spam and system-gaming attempts flooded the site. The founder had no marketing strategy and hoped for viral growth that never came, so traffic never grew and the self-funded project was wound down after a few months.
