01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

Reach.ly was a Latvian B2B SaaS startup co-founded by Ernests Stals. It went through two iterations: first a Twitter-mining solution for hotels, then a behavioural analytics product for e-commerce that tracked on-site visitor behaviour for online retailers.

02 / Reach.ly FAILURE REASONS

Why it failed

Co-founder Ernests Stals attributed the failure to five compounding mistakes. Carrying all the previous angels through the pivot left a cap table no VC would touch at a reasonable valuation. The team over-engineered a Big Data stack — a Hadoop/HBase cluster burning nearly $1,000 a month in hosting before there was a single customer or working prototype. They lost their pilot client and discovered Shopify merchants were too small to sustain the product, leaving them with no feedback loop on the prototype. A technology-centric team misaligned with business goals cost half a year of re-hiring, and investor communication lacked the one thing that mattered — burn rate and runway. The team wound down Reach.ly and moved on to a new venture, Dripit.io.
