01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Table8 was a restaurant reservation platform founded by venture capitalist Pete Goettner and Santosh Jayaram (former Twitter VP of business operations), launched in San Francisco around 2014. It partnered with popular restaurants and sold last-minute access to tables that were normally sold out weeks in advance - like StubHub for dining, or an upscale hotel concierge - charging diners roughly $20 or more per reservation (about $25 for peak slots). It raised $4.6 million in May 2014 led by Concur Technologies' Perfect Trip Fund with angel investors, and expanded to six US cities. It later wrapped up operations in the crowded reservations space.
02 / Table8 FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
No detailed founder post-mortem of Table8's closure was published; the documented cause is simply that it wrapped up operations in a crowded reservations space. The market dynamics are clear from contemporary coverage: OpenTable was the entrenched big dog with tens of thousands of restaurants and hundreds of millions of users, while Table8, Resy, Reserve and others fought over a premium niche - selling access to prime, sold-out tables for a fee. For a marketplace that needed both diners willing to pay and restaurants willing to carve out scarce inventory, the crowded field made scale hard to reach.
