01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Basement was a Y Combinator Winter 2019 startup that pitched itself as 'the social network for your close friends.' Founded by Fernando Rojo and Jeremy Berman, it was designed for college students and graduates to share with only their closest circle: users were limited to 20 friends, and the feed had no filters or influencers. Posts could be shared with tagged mutual friends, comments from non-friends appeared anonymously, and the founders planned a subscription model - free for the first year, paid after - with no ads.
