01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
SeedFi was a financial health fintech founded in March 2019 by Jim McGinley (CEO) and Eric Burton (COO), whose team had worked at both mission-driven startups and big banks like JPMorgan Chase and Capital One. It built products for Americans living paycheck to paycheck — Credit Builder and Borrow & Grow — designed to help users build credit, save money and access funds. Its two flagship products combined savings with credit so that customers could address immediate credit needs while building toward a better financial future. Andreessen Horowitz led both its $4 million seed round at founding and its $65 million Series A in February 2021 ($15 million equity plus $50 million in debt), with Flourish, Core Innovation Capital and Quiet Capital participating; total funding reached $69 million. In late 2021 Credit Karma partnered with SeedFi to offer Credit Builder to its members — members increased their credit score by an average of 21 points in 30 to 45 days and built up over $10 million in savings.
