01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

MFine was a Bengaluru-based digital health platform founded in December 2017 by former Myntra executives Ashutosh Lawania and Prasad Kompalli (later joined by Ajit Narayanan and Arjun Choudhary). Its AI-assisted platform offered on-demand doctor consultations across specialties, diagnostics, e-pharmacy and inpatient procedures, partnering with hospitals, clinics, diagnostics and radiology providers across 400+ Indian cities and 700+ diagnostic centres, processing about 300,000 transactions a month. Backed by Beenext, Stellaris Venture Partners, SBI Group, Prime Venture Partners and Heritas Capital, it raised close to $97 million and was last valued around $450 million after a $48 million Series C in September 2021. Its Singapore holding entity was wound down in 2023.

02 / Mfine Singapore (Wind-Down) FAILURE REASONS

Failure reasons

MFine collapsed under unsustainable unit economics exposed by the 2022 funding winter. It spent Rs 258 crore to earn just Rs 50 crore of revenue in FY22 - a burn ratio no amount of scale could fix, worsening from Rs 112 crore of spend for Rs 5 crore of revenue in FY20. When the funding environment froze, MFine was unable to pay salaries for the coming months: in May 2022 it laid off 500-600 employees, up to 75% of its workforce, dissolving most of its sales and marketing teams, after a planned follow-on financing fell through. Two months later it merged its diagnostics arm with LifeCell International to form 'LifeWell', which raised $80 million from OrbiMed - a rescue that preserved the business but ended MFine as a standalone company. The Singapore holding entity was subsequently wound down.
