01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

PetPair was an Austin, Texas pet-adoption marketplace founded in 2021 by CEO Daniel Miyares and co-founder Aanandh Chandrasekar. It ran a three-sided marketplace connecting animal shelters, fosters and adopters: fosters created photos, videos and behavioural profiles of their foster dogs, which the platform used to match dogs with adopters nationwide, transporting animals across the country with vetted providers. It raised $1.2 million across two pre-seed rounds (led by Bling Capital) and planned to add pet product recommendations.

02 / PetPair FAILURE REASONS

Failure reasons

PetPair could not build a sustainable business around pet adoption. The model was operationally heavy — recruiting fosters, background-checking them, creating content, and coordinating nationwide pet transport — while revenue levers (a marketplace for adoptions plus future product recommendations) were thin and slow to materialise. After raising $1.2 million, the company ran out of runway: PitchBook records PetPair as 'Out of Business' on July 3, 2024.
