01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Theia was a São Paulo-based maternal-health startup founded by Stanford MBA graduates Flavia Deutsch (CEO) and Paula Crespi (COO). It built a parental support platform giving parents access — via chats or video calls — to obstetric nurses, gynecologists, pelvic physiotherapists, pediatricians, psychologists and other professionals. By 2022 it had consulted over 1,000 pregnant women, claiming to have cut the C-section rate among its patients to 65% in a country where 80%+ of births are via C-section. Consultations cost patients 200-400 reais ($42.50-$85). It raised $1.7M early from Kaszek Ventures and Maya Capital, then a $6.4M seed round in April 2022 from 8VC, Canaan and Kaszek.
