01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Tantan's international units were the overseas expansion arm of the Chinese dating app Tantan. India was its flagship market: the company identified India as its gateway to the rest of Asia, localizing the app and setting a goal of 200 million Indian users by 2021, after the app's 2018 acquisition by Momo.
02 / Tantan (International Units) FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
In September 2020, India's Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology banned Tantan along with 117 other Chinese-affiliated apps, citing national-security concerns and alleged unauthorized transmission of user data to servers outside India. The ban destroyed the foundation of Tantan's international expansion, which had been concentrated on the Indian market.
