Chirp
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Chirp (Chirp.io) was a British data-over-sound technology company founded in 2011 as a spin-out of research from the Computer Science department at University College London. It pioneered software-defined acoustic data transmission: encoding data as sound so that any audio-capable device could send and receive information, providing low-cost, low-power, frictionless device-to-device connectivity for the IoT world. Running on Arm (Cortex-M4/M7) and virtually any embedded platform, its technology lowered the cost of proximity detection, device provisioning, two-way 'acoustic NFC' and telemetry in RF-restricted environments. In early 2020 Sonos, the Santa Barbara wireless speaker company, acquired Chirp, calling it the perfect match of audio and wireless technology after the two had worked together for about a year; Sonos discontinued public access to the Chirp SDK on March 1, 2020.
02 / Chirp FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Chirp was not a failure — it was a strategic technology acquisition. The logic is straightforward: data-over-sound is an enabling technology, not a standalone consumer product, and its value compounds when embedded inside a hardware ecosystem. Sonos was expanding its connected ecosystem of smart devices and had already invested in voice and edge-processing technologies; after about a year of working together, it bought Chirp to bring the acoustic-data-transmission capability in-house. The standalone company had a promising trajectory of industry partnerships but faced the classic deep-tech problem: selling an SDK to many small embedded developers is slow and fragmented, while one large speaker maker could absorb the whole technology at once. The acquisition was therefore a successful exit: the technology lived on inside Sonos's ecosystem rather than as an independent business. No failure reasons apply.
