01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Nvelop Therapeutics was a Boston-area drug delivery biotech formed in 2022 and publicly launched in April 2024, led by CEO Jeff Walsh, the former chief strategy officer of bluebird bio. It developed non-viral, programmable delivery technology to carry DNA-modifying machinery to precise tissues in the body for in vivo genetic medicines. On December 11, 2024, it merged with fellow gene-editing startup Chroma Medicine to launch nChroma Bio — combining Chroma's epigenetic editing 'cargo' with Nvelop's delivery vehicles — alongside an oversubscribed $75 million financing round led by Cormorant Asset Management, ARCH Venture Partners, Atlas Venture, and Newpath Partners. The merger involved layoffs on both sides; Jeff Walsh became CEO and Jeff Marrazzo chairman of the combined company, whose lead program is CRMA-1001, a liver-targeted epigenetic editing therapy for chronic hepatitis B and D.
