01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
HoverChat was an Android SMS-replacement app — formerly known as Ninja SMS — built by Egyptian founders Wael Nafee, Mostafa Gazar and Ahmed Galal, the first Egyptian Y Combinator startup. It brought Facebook-Messenger-style floating chat heads to regular SMS: incoming texts appeared as movable, minimizable contact-photo bubbles over whatever app the user had open, with transparency mode, themes and encrypted messaging between HoverChat users. It passed 200,000 downloads on Google Play and was averaging around 8,000 new downloads a day in 2014.
