01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Couple, launched in 2012 as Pair by Y Combinator startup TenthBit (CEO Oleg Kostour), was a mobile app that provided a messaging service for exactly two people - especially romantic couples. It allowed users to share text, photos, video, and other content, and to doodle remotely on the same canvas - a competitor to WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger but confined to a single other person. The free app garnered more than 100,000 users in its first week. On February 2, 2013, TenthBit acquired its UK rival Cupple (a private photo-sharing network for two, launched in 2011 out of creative agency Darling Dash) and rebranded the merged app from Pair to Couple - killing two birds with one stone, as the new name also resolved a trademark infringement lawsuit from pair Networks. Couple was later acquired by family app Life360 in February 2016, and the app became defunct on April 22, 2019.
