02 / Atomized FAILURE REASONS
Failure factors supported by the current evidence
Founder/CEO Nik Kotov’s 6 April 2022 Medium post-mortem said YC S20 Charlotte company Atomized (atomizedhq) collectively decided in January 2022 to shut down after reaching what he called the “Fatal Pinch”: after a 2021 pivot from compliance automation to a developer PaaS, the team over-engineered (he cited over seven million lines of code), delayed launch, raised burn (one month over $60k on wages/office), approached the end of runway, and failed to raise a follow-on round because investors would not fund a company “slowly approaching our death.” He also cited hiring/firing mistakes, weak marketing, insufficient customer research, and pivoting off a revenue plateau.
Kotov wrote the company burned more capital than expected, approached the end of runway, and a small follow-on raise “made zero sense” to investors because they were “slowly approaching our death.”
He attributed failure in part to over-engineering (over seven million lines of code), delayed launches, and a 2021 pivot that started from scratch.
He listed hiring too fast and firing too slow, and hiring people from his network who were not a fit for a startup environment.
