01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Decide.com was a Seattle-based shopping research site co-founded by University of Washington computer science professor Oren Etzioni and CEO Mike Fridgen. Using machine learning and text mining over billions of price points, it predicted whether prices on consumer electronics, housewares and other products were going up or down, telling shoppers whether to buy now or wait. The company raised about $17 million from Vulcan Capital, Maveron and Madrona Venture Group. In September 2013, eBay acquired Decide.com; the standalone site shut down on September 30 and all 26 staffers except Etzioni joined eBay's Bellevue office to build seller pricing tools.
