Light Table/Eve
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Light Table and Eve were two acts of Chris Granger's quest to make programming accessible. Light Table (2012) was an IDE with instant code feedback inspired by Bret Victor's 'Inventing on Principle' talk, crowdfunded on Kickstarter ($300K against a $200K goal) and open-sourced in January 2014. Eve (founded late 2013 by Granger and Rob Attorri) went further: a browser-based literate programming environment with a Datalog-inspired language that unified the whole stack — UI, databases, APIs — into simple commit/bind/search operations on records, letting people 'program' by manipulating tables like Excel. Andreessen Horowitz backed Eve with $2.3 million in 2014.
02 / Light Table/Eve FAILURE REASONS
Failure factors
On 24 Jan 2018 founder Chris Granger announced on the Eve talk list that after months of meetings the team could not find a good home (acquirer/host) for Eve and therefore had to wind the company down; a later reply in the same thread summarized the reason as funding—investor support tied to B2B applications that did not materialize on the desired timeline.
Thread follow-up stated Eve development was supported by investors interested in B2B applications that did not sufficiently materialize on the desired timeline.
Granger wrote the team could not find a good home for Eve despite promising leads and many meetings.
