01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

Handspring, founded in Mountain View in June 1998 by Jeff Hawkins, Donna Dubinsky and Ed Colligan — the original inventors of the PalmPilot who left Palm after its acquisition by 3Com — was an American electronics company that developed Palm OS-based Visor and Treo personal digital assistants. The Springboard expansion slot added GPS, cameras, music players and cell service, making Treo one of the first smartphone lines; the company went public on NASDAQ (HAND) in June 2000, its shares rising 35% on the first day of trading.
