01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

Rovco was a Bristol-based subsea robotics company founded in 2016 by Brian Allen. It built live 3D vision and AI survey systems carried by remotely operated and autonomous underwater vehicles, aiming to cut offshore inspection costs by up to 80% for oil, gas and offshore wind operators. Backed by Innovate UK grants and investors including Foresight Group, Equinor and IQT, Rovco merged with its sister company Vaarst in September 2024 under the new brand Beam. Beam filed for administration in May 2025 and ceased trading.

02 / Rovco FAILURE REASONS

Failure reasons

Rovco's collapse came after an aggressive expansion under the Beam brand: a 200-strong workforce, plans to hire 150 more people in the UK and 50 globally, a £15 million fleet investment, and a reported attempt to raise more than £100 million in late 2024. The capital-intensive offshore-services model ran out of cash; Beam filed for administration at the beginning of May 2025, making all staff redundant and ceasing trading. The administrators' report later showed creditors were left about £50 million out of pocket.
