01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

Design Inc. was a B2B design marketplace founded in 2016 by Marc Hemeon (co-founder of fflick, acquired by YouTube) and Bjoern Zinssmeister (former senior engineer at Match.com). It connected companies and individuals with freelance designers. The company went through four major versions: early iterations tried to take a cut of each transaction, then pivoted to a pay-to-propose model borrowed from Thumbtack - companies posted projects and designers paid $5 to $35 to submit proposals, capped at five per project. Backers included Harrison Metal, OATV, Collaborative Fund, BoxGroup, Okapi Ventures and 500 Startups.

02 / Design Inc. FAILURE REASONS

Failure reasons

Design Inc. failed because its business model made too little money in a market that was too small to grind to success. Early versions were good at matching companies with designers but terrible at capturing revenue: designers resented the platform taking a cut of their billings and transacted off-platform. The pay-to-propose pivot finally generated revenue and positive feedback, but growth stayed slow despite seven months of daily iteration across every channel. The company was bleeding cash with limited runway, and the founder was not confident the market could ever be large enough to justify another funding round. With board and investor support, he chose to close the company and return remaining funds to investors.

05 / CAUSAL CHAIN

How the factors connect

  1. 01

In 2016, Marc Hemeon and Bjoern Zinssmeister founded Design Inc., a marketplace connecting companies with freelance designers; early versions took a cut of each transaction.

  2. 02

The company pivoted to a pay-to-propose model: companies posted projects and designers paid $5 to $35 to submit proposals, capped at five per project.

  3. 03

After seven months of daily iteration the model generated revenue and good reviews, but growth stayed slow while cash kept bleeding.

  4. 04

On August 17, 2017, Hemeon announced the decision to close Design Inc.: remaining funds were returned to investors, the team was dissolved, designers were reimbursed and the platform closed for good. Over its life, the platform had helped over 900 companies complete more than $4 million in design projects. No reliable loss figure was disclosed, so no loss amount is recorded.
