SoFi Technologies
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
SoFi Technologies (Social Finance, Inc.) is a San Francisco-based fintech founded in 2011 by Stanford GSB students Mike Cagney, Dan Macklin, James Finnigan and Ian Brady. Starting as an alumni-funded student-loan refinancing pilot, it grew into an all-digital financial platform offering student and personal loans, mortgages, checking and savings, investing, credit cards and insurance. It went public via a SPAC merger in 2021 at an $8.65 billion valuation, and received a national bank charter in 2022.
02 / SoFi Technologies FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
SoFi did not fail as a company—it kept growing and turned GAAP-profitable—but 2024 became its annus horribilis for investors. The stock lost 34% of its value in the first half of 2024 even as revenue grew 26% year over year: high interest rates squeezed its core lending business (the loan book was guided to 92–95% of 2023 levels, lending-platform revenue fell 2% in Q1, and rising default risk spooked the market). Shareholders experienced a major value wipeout despite solid operations.
