Pivo Technology Inc
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Pivo Technology Inc was a Nigerian supply-chain fintech founded in July 2021 by Nkiru Amadi-Emina (CEO) and Ijeoma Jacquelyn Akwiwu (COO), two women with supply-chain business experience. It positioned itself as a digital bank for trade, offering banking and financing to SMEs in Africa's supply-chain and logistics sectors through two products: Pivo Capital, a lending platform, and Pivo Business, a business-banking product. The company claimed to have disbursed over $3 million in loans and processed over $4 million through Pivo Business. It went through Y Combinator's Summer 2022 batch and announced a $2 million seed round in November 2022 (bringing total raised to $2.6M), earmarked for East African expansion.
02 / Pivo Technology Inc FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Pivo shut down because of an unresolved conflict between its two founders, according to sources familiar with the matter: the rift between CEO Nkiru Amadi-Emina and COO Ijeoma Akwiwu was said to have damaged the company's reputation, business relationships, culture and team dynamics — materially hurting its ability to raise follow-on capital. Investors tried to mediate: a May 2023 memo called for replacing the founders' employment agreements and installing an operational board. The dispute could not be resolved, and the company closed shop in December 2023, a year after its $2M seed round, amid the broader African funding downturn.

05 / AFTERMATH
Aftermath
Pivo became a cautionary example of founder-conflict killing a promising African fintech: it joined the 2023 wave of Nigerian startup shutdowns (alongside Lazerpay, 54gene and Hytch), but unlike most, its closure was attributed to governance failure rather than the macro funding crunch. No buyer or asset sale was reported.
