01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
SnipSnap was a Philadelphia-based coupon app founded by Ted Mann (sources place founding in 2011–12). It billed itself as the first app to scan, save and redeem printed coupons on a mobile phone: users photographed paper coupons, the app identified the barcode and created a mobile-optimized one retailers could scan. Uploaded coupons were crowdsourced, so one person's photo became available to all users—over 100 million coupons were compiled, claimed to save users over $200 million. An enterprise line let retailers like Bed Bath & Beyond, Rite Aid and Toys R Us create coupons for their own channels. It raised about $4 million.
