Covo
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
COVO was a San Francisco 'combo space' founded in 2015, blending coworking with cafe and coliving-style hospitality. Located a block from the Westfield mall, its lobby featured a public coffee bar where non-members could grab a coffee and work for $3/hour in a beautifully designed, home-like cafe area; the first floor offered public cafe space and meeting rooms, the lower floor private offices and dedicated member areas, and the bar opened for business in the early evening, flexing the cafe into an event space for up to 400 people after hours. Led by CEO Rebecca Pan (formerly COO of NextSpace, a Bay Area coworking operator), COVO partnered with West Elm on furniture and aimed to bring 'home to work.' The startup's record marks it as shut down in 2020; no public shutdown announcement was found.
02 / Covo FAILURE REASONS
Failure factors supported by the current evidence
The Seattle Times reported Covo, the Mission District coworking space, lost 94% of its business in the first months of the COVID-19 pandemic, which preceded its October 2020 close. SF Chronicle (13 May 2024) separately quoted founder Rebecca Pan that the Covo business collapsed due to COVID-19 regulations.
