Jingxi
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Jingxi (京喜) was the social e-commerce arm of Chinese retail giant JD.com, launched in 2019 as a rival to Pinduoduo targeting consumers in small cities and rural areas as part of JD's push into lower-tier markets. Its flagship product, Jingxi Pinpin, was a community group-buying service offering low-cost products with next-day arrival through community pickup points, competing with Pinduoduo's Duoduo Maicai and Meituan Youxuan. In 2022 the business was heavily retrenched: 10–15% of staff were laid off, Jingxi Pinpin shrank from more than 20 provinces to just a few regions, and the Jingxi Business Group was disbanded with parts merged into JD retail.
02 / Jingxi FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
China's community group-buying boom cooled fast after regulators demanded companies stop price dumping and unfair competition in December 2020. Jingxi's model — subsidized low prices with next-day community pickup — burned cash without achieving the scale to stand against Pinduoduo and Meituan. JD's new business reported a CNY 10.51 billion loss in 2021, with Jingxi the main source of those losses. Founder Liu Qiangdong admitted the failure of Jingxi at the group's strategy meeting in July 2022, and the Jingxi Business Group was disbanded.
