01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

Pit.ai was a San Francisco machine-learning-powered hedge fund founded in 2017 (Y Combinator Winter 2017) by Yves-Laurent Kom Samo, a Google Fellow in Machine Learning with a PhD from Oxford and a former quantitative trader at Goldman Sachs. Instead of mining data for information arbitrage like competitors, Pit.ai used a variant of reinforcement learning to evaluate trading strategies themselves, judged on financial metrics such as Sharpe ratios and maximum drawdown. It planned to stay lean with no analyst teams, charge no management fees — taking only carried interest from limited partners — and thereby out-compete rivals like Numerai and Quantopian.

02 / Pit.AI FAILURE REASONS

Failure reasons

Pit.ai never reached scale. In 2017 its founder acknowledged the company had yet to raise a fund to trade with from limited partners and was trading only simulated models. It raised just $120K of total venture funding — far short of what a trading fund requires — and never attracted the institutional capital its business model depended on. With limited runway and no fund launched, it was marked out of business on November 1, 2020.

05 / AFTERMATH

Aftermath

Pit.ai left no surviving product or fund; it simply ceased operations. Its approach — reinforcement-learning strategy evaluation and fee-only carry — never reached live trading at institutional scale.
