01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Robby Technologies was a Palo Alto-based robotics company founded in 2016 by MIT graduates, including co-founder and CEO Rui Li. It built self-driving six-wheeled robots for last-mile delivery of food, groceries and packages to doorsteps — the Robby 2, shown at CES 2018, had all-wheel drive, could climb 40-degree inclines, travel over 20 miles on a charge, and navigate at night with infrared cameras. Its highest-profile deployment came in January 2019, when PepsiCo partnered with Robby to launch 'snackbot' robot vending machines delivering snacks and drinks to students at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California. No shutdown, acquisition or other failure event was found — its status is unclear. Note: the record's event_year 2019 appears to reflect the PepsiCo partnership, not a failure.
