Aspiration
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Aspiration (Aspiration Partners Inc.) was a Los Angeles climate-finance fintech founded in 2013 by Andrei Cherny and Joseph Sanberg, selling itself as green banking: Spend, Save and investment accounts plus a 'fossil-fuel free' mutual fund, tree-planting promises, and carbon-credit arrangements for companies. Backed by celebrities including Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert Downey Jr. and Cindy Crawford as well as Steve Ballmer, it raised over $550 million and planned a $2.3 billion SPAC merger in 2021 that was delayed and terminated in 2022. In February 2024 its consumer platform was handed to Mission Financial Partners, while the remaining business arranged carbon credits under the name CTN Holdings.
02 / Aspiration FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Aspiration's collapse was driven by fraud at the top. Co-founder Joseph Sanberg was arrested in March 2025 and later sentenced to 14 years in prison for defrauding investors and lenders of $248 million between 2020 and 2025 using fake clients, sham payments and deceptive loan collateral. With debts of about $170 million, the company filed for Chapter 11 in March 2025 to sell its assets and pay creditors; an existing lender, Inherent Aspiration LLC, made a $20 million credit bid as lead bidder. A 2021 ProPublica investigation had already cast doubt on Aspiration's green claims, such as the '35 million trees planted' figure and the definition of its '5 million passionate members.'
