01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
ScaleFactor was an Austin accounting and finance platform for small businesses, founded in 2014 by Kurt Rathmann. It marketed itself as AI-powered software that could handle bookkeeping, bills, taxes, payroll and financial forecasting at a fraction of the cost of an accountant. The pitch convinced big-name investors: it raised about $103 million, including a $10 million Series A led by Canaan in July 2018, a $30 million Series B led by Bessemer Venture Partners in January 2019, and a $60 million Series C led by Coatue in August 2019.
02 / ScaleFactor FAILURE REASONS
Why it failed
The AI story did not hold up. In reality, most of the work was done manually by staff in Austin and an outsourced office in the Philippines, according to former employees, and some customers said their books came back full of mistakes and had to re-hire accountants. When COVID-19 hit, CEO Kurt Rathmann said the pandemic wiped out half the company's revenue, and on June 24, 2020 ScaleFactor announced it was suspending most of its operations, laying off half its workforce and returning a portion of investor capital. The platform shut down in August 2020, affecting roughly 1,000 small business customers.
