01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
ExceptionAlly was a Y Combinator-backed startup helping parents of children with special needs navigate the special-education system. Founded in 2018 and led by co-founder and CEO Rayford Davis, its platform helped parents understand, organize, and communicate everything needed to secure their child's services from schools: decoding the child's condition and legal rights, structuring documents such as IEP (individual education plan) and 504 plans, and providing an action toolkit for holding schools accountable. Davis described it as 'TurboTax for special education': a large share of the value of a special-education attorney at a small fraction of the cost.
