Zulily
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Zulily was a Seattle-based online retailer running a flash-sale model aimed at mothers and families with young children. It sold clothing, footwear, and home goods for women and children through daily deals from thousands of vendors. Founded in 2010 by Darrell Cavens and Mark Vadon, it went public on Nasdaq in 2013 and at its peak was valued near $9 billion before being taken private.
02 / Zulily FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Zulily's flash-sale model eroded as competition intensified from Amazon and fast-fashion giants like Shein and Temu, and the company never rebuilt a durable growth engine after its 2015 acquisition by Qurate. Revenues declined sharply through 2022 and 2023, prompting layoffs and Qurate's sale of the business to private-equity firm Regent in May 2023. Under Regent the collapse accelerated: the CEO resigned in October 2023, Zulily cut hundreds of jobs in December, and the company chose an orderly wind-down and liquidation rather than attempting a turnaround.
