Yahoo Buzz
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Yahoo Buzz was a community-based news site, heavily modeled on Digg, that combined social bookmarking with user voting. Launched in February 2008 and opened to the public that November, it let users submit and vote on news stories from publishers; the most buzzed stories could be promoted to the Yahoo homepage, driving millions of visits. It never gained real traction, and Yahoo shut it down on April 21, 2011.
02 / Yahoo Buzz FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Buzz never took off. Observers described its platform as buggy and lacking innovation, and it lost the social-news race to Digg, Reddit and Facebook, which gained far more traction with internet users. Its main differentiator — a shot at Yahoo homepage placement — masked weak organic demand: users were not really seeking social news curation, so engagement collapsed once the homepage promotion lost priority. In 2011 Yahoo decided to cut underperforming products and focus on its core strengths, and Buzz was shut down. This concerns Buzz's product and Yahoo's portfolio choice, not community news as a concept.
