Imgfave
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
imgfave was a San Francisco image-sharing community founded by Gabe Ragland. It let users collect images found anywhere online in one place via a bookmarklet widget — images were highlighted on the page and 'magically whisked' to the user's profile — then friend, follow, and build collections of art, photography, fashion and visual inspiration. It was a Y Combinator Summer 2012 company backed by YC and a16z.

05 / CAUSAL CHAIN
How the factors connect
- 01
A bookmarklet is a feature, not a moat — Pinterest owned the visual-discovery category while imgfave stayed a niche.
- 02
If the community is the product, losing it to a bigger platform is terminal.
- 03
Shut down with dignity: PitchBook marks imgfave out of business rather than letting it linger.
