Metromile
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Metromile was a US digital insurer founded in 2011 that pioneered pay-per-mile auto insurance. Drivers plugged a Pulse device into their cars to track mileage, paying a low base rate plus a per-mile charge that rewarded low-mileage drivers, alongside an enterprise SaaS platform for claims automation and fraud detection.
02 / Metromile FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Metromile never made the pay-per-mile model work as a standalone business. After going public via SPAC, its market value collapsed; when Lemonade agreed to buy it in November 2021, the all-stock deal implied only about $500 million of equity value, or roughly $200 million net of cash. By closing in July 2022 the price had fallen to about $145 million in stock - less than the $155 million of cash Lemonade received in the deal. The brand was retired and customers were moved onto Lemonade Car.
