Cord
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Cord was a London-based startup offering a single API to add Slack-like collaboration features to any app. Its single line of JavaScript introduced chat, presence, annotations, integrations with task managers and Slack, screen recordings, audio messages, live co-browsing, and video chat into any product - 'shaving years of development time' off building collaboration into B2B SaaS. After a private beta with hundreds of clients, it opened general access in 2021 and revealed a partnership with Typeform, which used Cord's API to let customers collaborate while designing online forms. In October 2021 it raised a $17.5 million Series A led by Index Ventures, with NFX, Stride, and angels including Elad Gil, Jeff Morris Jr., Charlie Songhurst, Guy Podjarny, and Matt Robinson. The startup's record marks it as shut down in 2024; no public shutdown announcement was found.
02 / Cord FAILURE REASONS
Failure factors supported by the current evidence
Co-founder/CTO Jackson Gabbard (10 Jan 2025) says Cord did not win: ~$500K ARR did not justify the team and spend, GTM failed almost entirely, and NIH/build-vs-buy resistance from buyer engineering teams blocked deals despite product-leader interest.
~$500K ARR was not enough to justify the large team and expenditures.
Failed more or less entirely on go-to-market.
Product leaders were interested; engineering teams preferred to build chat themselves (NIH).
03 / EVENT HISTORY
Events in the structured record
- Operations ended
Gabbard (10 Jan 2025; ‘across the last six months’) says they ended Cord, returned a large portion of remaining capital, and open-sourced the SDK. LinkedIn lists his Cord CTO tenure through Sep 2024. Companies House still shows CORD TECHNOLOGIES LIMITED as Active (entity not struck off); this is an operational halt, not administration.
