LocalTown\USA
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
LocalTown was an online marketplace built with no-code tools, founded by Michael Novotny. Noticing that independent makers needed help launching their side projects, he built the marketplace on Sharetribe to serve that niche. The product earned some early revenue and local press coverage, but could not sustain itself and closed in 2018.
02 / LocalTown\USA FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
LocalTown failed on market fit and distribution. The founder spent a year building the product without validating demand, setting up an audience, or doing the groundwork a launch requires. The niche of makers launching side projects generated too little transaction volume to monetize, and without an audience-building effort the marketplace never reached the liquidity it needed. Early revenue and press coverage did not convert into a sustainable business.
