01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Determined AI was a San Francisco startup founded in 2017 by Neil Conway, Evan Sparks and Ameet Talwalkar (a Carnegie Mellon machine learning professor), with contributions from PhD students and faculty at UC Berkeley and CMU. It built an open-source deep learning training platform that made building models fast and easy: high-performance distributed training, hyperparameter tuning, GPU scheduling and model management in one integrated environment, so engineers could focus on models instead of infrastructure. It launched the open-source platform in 2020 and was acquired by Hewlett Packard Enterprise in June 2021, joining HPE's High Performance Computing and Mission Critical Solutions group with the platform kept open source.
